Insurance & your rights

You have more control over your collision repair than your insurance company might tell you. Here's what you should know.

Your right to choose your shop

Michigan law gives you, the policyholder, the right to choose which repair shop fixes your vehicle. Your insurance company cannot force you to use a specific shop.

Many insurers have "preferred shop" or Direct Repair Program networks. Those shops agree to discounts in exchange for referrals, which means the insurer saves money. You don't have to use them. Motor City works for you, and we talk directly with your adjuster to make sure all the damage gets covered.

What insurance steering sounds like

If you hear any of these, you are being steered, and you have the right to say no:

"We can only guarantee the repair if you use one of our preferred shops."
"We'll need to inspect it first, take it to our shop."
"Our preferred shops are faster."
"We can't guarantee rental coverage if you go somewhere else."
"That shop isn't on our approved list."

Your answer: "I'm choosing Motor City Automotive & Collision at 18200 Joy Rd, Detroit, MI 48228."

How We Handle Your Claim

We deal with the insurance

We talk to the adjuster

No phone tag between you, us, and your insurer. We send the estimate and photos directly.

We document hidden damage

Once the car is taken apart, we photograph and document damage you can't see from the outside.

We submit supplements

When more damage turns up during the repair, and it often does, we send it to your insurer so it's covered.

Waived deductible

Waived deductible options are available on qualifying repairs. Call us and we'll explain how it works for your claim.

Michigan mini-tort

If you were hit by an at-fault driver and you don't have collision coverage, or you're stuck paying a deductible, Michigan's mini-tort law lets you recover up to $3,000 in vehicle damage from the at-fault driver.

To pursue mini-tort, you'll usually need:

  • Proof the other driver was at fault (a police report helps)
  • A written repair estimate from a repair shop (we can provide this)
  • Information about the at-fault driver and their insurance

This is general information, not legal advice. For specific legal questions, talk to a Michigan attorney. We're happy to provide the repair documentation you need.
